Join the fun along Citizens Bank Way on Saturday, August 8, when former Phillies centerfielder Garry Maddox hosts his eighth annual Barbecue Challenge. Admission to the Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge is free. Visitors can enjoy family-friendly entertainment while sampling food from participating vendors along our Restaurant Row. Food tickets will be available for purchase in the contest location on August 8 and can be redeemed at participating stands while supplies last. All proceeds benefit the Youth Golf & Academics Program (YGAP), an academic enrichment program founded by Garry Maddox to support children in grades K-8 who reside in troubled city neighborhoods.
The Barbecue Challenge features two categories for competition: one for restaurants and caterers, and one for "pit masters" (any individual barbecue enthusiast or team of enthusiasts not competing under the sponsorship of a restaurant). In both divisions, chefs vie for first through third place and honorable mention in three categories—chicken, ribs, and chef’s choice. The day ends with Garry’s Rib Challenge, a winner-take-all competition for a trip to the 2009 World Series. In this event highlight, there is no distinction between restaurants and pit masters: the single highest overall score wins.
Restaurants and pit masters interested in entering the contest can download an application package here, or contact Kerry Ann Williams at 856-756-0222 or ygapcamden@hotmail.com.
Restaurants and catering enterprises receive a 10x10 foot tented booth with signage and a serving counter. A limited number of charcoal grills are available to restaurants for reservation on a first-come, first-served basis (one grill per restaurant). Restaurants are permitted to provide samples of food to the public, but sales are not permitted.
Any barbecue enthusiast can enter the contest through the Pit Master Division. Participating individuals or teams will be assigned a lot (10 feet wide/20 feet deep) in which to set up and cook. Pit Master contestants are not permitted to sell food or offer samples to the public.
All contestants must abide by health and safety regulations.
